Lady of the Lake 2006 - 2007

The proposal was to take the fallen Larch tree that had stood in the church yard of St.Lawrence's church for 176 years, and to create a carving from this ancient twisted tree that had been struck by lightning many years ago...

Preserving the contorted growth of the trunk the tree had developed: as it had grown, the fluted shapes inspired Jonathan to carve them into folds of drapery, depicted the cloak of the emerging 'Lady of the Lake'.

The finished sculpture now stands in the grounds of Kirby Sigston Manor, close to the lake, and can be viewed by passers by, or church going community from the church lane. A piece of natural history, by which many couples have had their wedding photographs taken, preserved as a contemporary sculpture.

The three meter high carving depicts a modern Guinevere looking out across the waters of the lake, bearing fishes in her cloak; those ancient Christian symbols of peace.
